Great Egret (Ardea alba)
December 31 2007 in the Sacramento area was cold and foggy; this Great Egret near the American River Fish Hatchery had folded its neck into its back feathers for warmth. Behind the bird was a large willow tree with a dark trunk and in order to not have a distracting dark upper left corner in the photograph I leaned as far as I could to my right into a patch of star thistle to get a lighter tone in the upper left background. This was the only bird I saw all day.
